TMJ Relief

Before

After

TMJ disorders refer to issues involving the temporomandibular joint, which connects your jawbone to your skull. These disorders can cause pain and dysfunction in the jaw joint and the muscles that control jaw movement.

Symptoms

TMJ disorders can present a variety of symptoms, including:

  • Pain or tenderness in the jaw, especially at the joint area.

  • Pain in and around the ear.

  • Difficulty or discomfort while chewing.

  • Facial pain that may feel like aching.

  • Locking of the joint, making it difficult to open or close the mouth.

  • Clicking, popping, or grating sounds in the jaw joint when opening or closing the mouth, which may or may not be painful.

  • Headaches, dizziness, or earaches in some cases.

  • Relief and Management

Treatment options vary depending on the severity and cause of the TMJ disorder.

Common approaches include:

  • Self-Care Practices: Eating soft foods, applying ice packs, avoiding extreme jaw movements (like wide yawning, loud singing), and performing gentle jaw-stretching exercises.

  • Pain Relief: Over-the-counter pain relievers and anti-inflammatories, such as ibuprofen, can help alleviate pain and inflammation.

  • Stress Reduction: Since stress can exacerbate TMJ symptoms, techniques like meditation, deep breathing, or counseling can be beneficial.

  • Physical Therapy/Massage Therapy: Exercises to stretch and strengthen jaw muscles, along with techniques like ultrasound, moist heat, and ice.

  • Dental Splints or Mouth Guards: These can prevent teeth grinding and clenching, which might aggravate TMJ symptoms.

  • Medications: Sometimes muscle relaxants, anti-anxiety drugs, or antidepressants are prescribed for a short term to relieve TMJ pain.

  • Surgery or Other Procedures: In severe cases, options like corticosteroid injections, arthrocentesis, or surgery might be considered.
